Memory loss is a change that has an immense impact on a person but is something that can be easily controlled and reversed with simple steps. There are a variety of games available that can be played to improve the way the brain works. Generally, these games require the player to remember something in a sequence, to focus on copying an image, or to use what they already know to answer a series of questions. Activities like these encourage the brain to be used in a way that exercises the area that shows signs of under-performance.

  • Sudoku. Sudoku is a puzzle game where the player places a digit from one to nine in a grid of nine squares that is then divided into nine smaller squares. The digits can only be used once in each vertical and horizontal line, as well as each square.
  • Crossword puzzles. The classic crossword puzzle is great for brain function because it requires the player to answer a variety of questions or to complete phrases that may or may not be of common knowledge. These specific answers must fit in the spaces provided and, often times, serves as part of an answer for another question. If the information is not known based on common knowledge, the player is then required to research the information, thus stimulating brain function while learning something new.
  • Photo puzzles. These types of puzzles, varying in size and number of pieces, require the puzzle assembler to emulate an image that is typically on the front of the box. This is accomplished by joining cardboard pieces of the complete image together. Many of the puzzles for adults contain numerous pieces and require attention to detail, focus, and memory usage in order to get the puzzle to look exactly as the sample picture.
  • Brain-training games. The internet is a great resource to find brain-training games that work by requiring the player to remember various series of events and to answer questions afterward. The player is usually shown a video clip, a sequence of colors or shapes, or an image for a short time, then asked detailed questions about what was shown to them. These games are beneficial because the player will have to focus, remember, and respond to the comprehension questions.

For the many people suffering memory loss or decreased brain function, there are many ways that this decline can be combated early to, hopefully, avoid further issues. Games that foster improvement are easy to find and easy to start right away.
